APHRODITE'S ROCK

Aphrodite's Rock
The beautiful Aphrodite (Kypris) rose from the foaming sea near Paphos, Cyprus. The legend of the Greek goddess of love says that she was so attractive that men could not resist her.

It was winter time when I ventured down all those steep steps to the beach below.

I wanted to get close to one of the most famous tourist spots on earth. To my delight and amazement the small beach was deserted. My friends had refused to come down because of the long trek back up again. Lazy lot!

I had never seen so much seaweed. It lay like a deep carpet all over one end of the beach. At first I stepped on it tentatively, unsure of what might lurk beneath. I have no idea what I was wary of and the fact that I survived, limbs intact, proves that nothing strange, or sinister lay concealed beneath the surface.

Anyway, on with the story.

I stood at this famous landmark watching the sea foaming up and around Aphrodite's Rock. I was totally alone. The sea was crystal clear and a hot breeze ran along the surface of the water and up over the beach as I stood there. There was something quite magical about having it all to myself.
I stood a while, just basking in the silence and the warmth. At my feet was a small, pale blue pebble which I picked up and held in my hand as I walked back up the steps.

I still have that pebble and if I hold it in my hand and close my eyes I can almost see and feel that magical moment all over again.

The Graffiti Artist.

I bought a new pen yesterday

It's working very well,

That is was me who scribbled here

I'm sure no one will tell.

Walls are boring things you see,

Because they have no words.

Just bricks and moss and scratchy things

And messes left by birds.

This place is a favourite spot of mine, it is found on the B6 road to Limassol from Paphos. The name of this rock is in fact Petra tou Romiou, although it is called Aphrodites, there is another Aphrodites rock on the Polis side of the island and this is where she bathed with friends and lovers.
