We have 4 dogs and two kittens who share our home in Cyprus.
Jake’s story
Jake (Fatboy can't slim) is our cairn terrier from the UK he will be 9 years old April 2007.
He really belongs to Darren but circumstances changed and he stayed living with us. Jake then lived in Manchester with Darren for a year or more when we were planning our move to Cyprus, we then decided it would be better for Jake to join us in our new country and Darren flew him over in July 2005. He had been in his special dog crate (see useful information page) for approximately 11 hours when he finally reached our home. The journey had not worried or upset him in any way, it was midnight when he arrived, he leapt from his crate, ran down the garden to greet me, ran around like a pup, spotted Pete on the other side of the garden and not realising there was a swimming pool between the two of them Jake ran across it!!! The cartoon image of a dog running in mid air and looking down realising his mistake will stay with me forever, consequently Jake spent weeks walk around the perimeter of the garden fence, and to this day he avoids water. He loves Cyprus and enjoys the life of Lizard chasing and sunbathing; he has adjusted very well and has become a brilliant foster parent to the rescue dogs and cat we have introduced into the home. They are offered his toys and nudged and encouraged to play, the process is amazing to watch and thanks to him our rescues now have learnt that life for them is one big enjoyable game.
Ginny’s story
We saw a small pathetic, dirty, matted bundle in the middle of the Dog Rescue Centre where we were volunteering, she looked so sad.
We took her for a walk and to meet Jake and the two became buddies straight away. We made the decision to keep her and took her to the clinic for her release papers. There the vet said she was approximately one year old and she had been left tied up at the clinic one night, he also found she was blind in one eye probably through a violent kick and she was pregnant. The decision was made to spay her there and then as she was not fit enough and to check the eye.
That night we took her home, she settled straight away but was nervous of the dark. Now she is a happy, gentle little girl who loves nothing more than chasing around the garden and up and down the swimmingpool pathway when we are in for a swim.
Lucy’s story
Lucy was at the same centre as Ginny and she was living on a balcony with many other rescues. She used to jump at the doorway whenever she saw or heard Pete. The two became firm friends and we walked Lucy often. We introduced her to Jake and Ginny and another friendship formed. We talked a lot about housing her and finally agreed Lucy Locket was in need of the sort of home we could offer. She loves attention and everyone who meets her feels the love she has to offer and cannot resist sitting and stroking her. She runs around the garden like a greyhound and joins Ginny around the pool.
Max & Peter make friends
Max is our latest addition to our family, he was found starving outside our house during the hunting season in December 2006, the picture shows him 2 hours after we found him, note the skinny behind
MAX IN APRIL 2007
MEET SPIKE THE CAT THAT THINKS HE'S A DOG!
We moved into our new home June '06, beside the house is a small holding owned by our Cypriot friend Leftaris and his wife Maria. One evening after they had finished working on their land, Pete and I could hear a strange noise, eventually we realised a cat had been locked in their shed, so like thieves in the night we opened the shed door only to be greeted by hundreds of 3ft water barrels and grape collecting boxes, the noise was very loud now and it was obviously an animal in distress. Luckily the third barrel back held the answer, a tiny dying kitten, he had a huge corneal ulcer (with nursing and drops it reduced in size &the vision does not appear to be impaired). Spike has identical markings to the one we left in England. Although he was very weak this wild feral cat showed his true colours and bit and scratched Pete on the hand. We fed him and introduced the dogs to him and he has never left our home since. My Dad is always amazed by the way he and Ginny play like puppies for hours. When we take the dogs for a walk through the vineyards, Spike walks with us so far and on our return he runs down the lane with his tail held high and walks us home, we are quite an amusing sight.
END APRIL 2007: IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS THAT WE HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THAT OUR BELOVED SPIKE HAS DISAPPEARED!! IT IS NOW ONE MONTH AND HE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND. OUR HEARTS ARE HEAVY, THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM!!!
Your golden heart stopped beating
your adoring eyes went to rest
God broke our hearts to prove
he only takes the best
REMEMBERING A

GOOD NEWS MIXED WITH SAD!
After waiting for 2 months to see if Spike returned we made the decision to adopt two kittens from The MALCOLM CAT RESCUE CENTRE AT LIMASSOL

WHEN I VERY FIRST LAID EYES ON HIM HE MELTED MY HEART....& STILL DOES, THOSE THAT MEET HIM WILL TELL YOU THE SAME
My Reward
By Glynis Smy
Your eyes look down, searching
You move behind a tree
I watch you from a distance
Knowing you are scared of me.
Your starving body stumbles
Your skinny legs ache
A morsel you do seek
Dried bread, rotten meat or stale cake.
Your eyes are full of sadness
Your future’s not so bright
You have not found a friend to care
Nor a bed to rest your head tonight.
You need a decent meal to eat
And water to quench your thirst
I watch with sadness
Hoping I can get to you first.
There’s every chance you will runaway
When I reach out my hand to you
I know why you are in this state
And what I need to do
You did not reach the goal
Your master had in mind
You were taken on the hunt
And sadly left behind.
My four legged friend
I’ve got you
And happily take you in
And when you play with others
I swear you wear a grin
You reward me daily with your tail
It wags for all the day
You give me pleasure friend
When I see you play
