The Nature trails of Southern Cyprus have been laid out and constructed in such a way that all age groups can use them, they are well sign posted, circular and on gentle gradients.
The Forestry Department (with financial support from the Southern Cyprus Tourism Organisation) have created many trails in various parts of the island.
Don’t forget to wear sensible shoes in these areas
Take water, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses with you
Don’t take plants and flowers away from their environment
DO NOT LIGHT FIRES AND PUT OUT CIGARETTES CAREFULLY
BEWARE OF THE VIPER SNAKE (VIPERA LEBETINA) IF BITTEN SEEK MEDICAL AID ASAP (see
helpful information
page)
A map of the trails can be obtained from the Tourist Board
The Troodos Mountains are definitely worth visiting, this is a view from the top looking towards the occupied coastline on the northern side of the island. There is a ski centre at the top and in the winter 4x4 access is advisable and sometimes enforced.
One of the trips out that we and our visitors thoroughly enjoy is The Vouni Donkey Sanctuary, our friends Steve and Julie introduced us to the centre. Vouni is in the Limassol District of Cyprus. This charity cares for many old, sick and unwanted donkeys; it is lovely to see the donkeys enjoy better health and a loving environment. We have adopted ‘Gringo’ ‘Peter and Big Boy2’, the latter two were gifts for Dad and Dale (Nicola’s partner), we were stuck as to what to buy them and this was a great way of giving something different and boosting the sanctuary funds, they loved the novelty of the gift.
Our Day Out
By Glynis Smy 2005
We had a day out to Vouni Steve, Julie, Pete & Me
They took us to a Donkey Park The rescued ones to see.
There were big ones and small ones Some had floppy ears
To see their crippled bodies Moved you close to tears
Pete met a chap called Gringo
He’s appeared in a Shakespeare play
He looked into Peter’s eyes And said adopt me please, today
Carob bars are their favourites Crunching them one by one
Steve couldn’t get the angle right And tried to feed their bum!!!
Then we were taken to a Taverna Here we ate a special lunch
A dear little pup decided Upon our toes to crunch.
We then headed off to
The Nelion winery
And tasted the local brew
We Then Decided
Hic!
To buy A Bottle,
hic
or two!!

Where is the home for me?
Oh, Cyprus set in the sea?
Aphrodite’s home, in the soft sea-foam,
Would I could wend to thee'
Euripides: Dionysus
We were so busy during the summer with the garden landscaping that we almost forgot to take ‘time out’ but one glorious day we ventured along the B6 coastal road towards Limassol stopping at any brown tourist signs we came across.
Here are some of the places we visited:
Sanctuary of Aphrodite, Kouklia
Here you can see the ruins and museum pieces of the Goddess Aphrodite; she was associated with life, love and fertility.
Petra
tou Romiou (Rock of Romios
)
Petra tou Romiou means "the Rock of the Greek" and does not refer to Aphrodite but to another myth, that of the Byzantine hero Dighenis who threw the rocks at pirates to protect his lady.
The scenery here is fantastic. The Cypriot youths dive off of the top of this rock, it is said to be the birthplace of Aphrodite and is loaded with myth, tradition and memories.
Sanctuary of Apollo
Apollo Ylatis, God of the Woodland, was the protector of the city of Kourion
Kourion
This was a great historical place to visit, take water and wear flat shoes, enjoy a gentle stroll in historical, beautiful surroundings. Mosaics, Roman baths and open theatre are some of the attractions. I loved standing in the ruins of House of Achilles overlooking the sea; here you can imagine what life must have been like.
We have also stretched our legs in the Tomb of the Kings and visited the beautiful mosaics at Paphos.
Omodos, Platres and Lania villages in the Troodos are places we visit and never lose that feeling that these were and are sleepy, friendly villages, Lania is a favourite with artists.
The Monasteries are worth a look, there are some spectacular ones.
KYKKOS MONASTARY
The gold in the church is amazing, the museum is fascinating.
The book we use to find the next place to visit is:
Touring Guide of
Cyprus
by George Karouzis and Christina G. Karouzis
The Tourist centres here in
The Republic of Cyprus
also have lots of books and leaflets
Another good trip is to NICOSIA (Lefkosia) the capital of the south, here take time to go to the top of The Debenhams Store, here you can view the North, the occupied side of the island, there is a lot of historical information and we enjoyed walking to the border after looking across the deserted towns between the two sides. We visited this with friends Diane & Bob it was a very moving experience. Please note you can cross the border to the North of the island, you will need visa permit and hire cars are not permitted on the other side, some travel companies do a tour for the day.
There is the Bird and Animal Park at Paphos, this is a pleasant day out for all the family.
There are many companies offering water sports. We use Latchi Watersports when we take out a speed boat and Darren had an enjoyable first Dive instruction with the same group. There is also a Dive centre in the Polis square this is a different company and they have been highly recommended to us by a friend.
Those of you who are fans of the reptilian world will enjoy a visit to ‘
Snake Georges’ Reptile Park in Paphos.
Here you will come across a variety of species indigenous to Cyprus.
Hans-Jorg Wiedl is an Austrian and came to Cyprus in 1973 as a UN soldier, found that many Cypriots would be helped overcome their fear of snakes (and it is a very big fear) if there was somewhere for them to learn more about reptiles.
